THIS IS NOT THE END OF THE STORY
Your Family Member Was Arrested. Here's What You Can Do.
JWHope works directly with families navigating drug-related charges — helping you understand your options and take action before sentencing
You Don't Have to Wait for an Attorney to Call Us
Most families assume they need to wait for a lawyer to handle everything. You don't. JWHope works directly with families from the moment of arrest — helping you understand what clinical alternatives exist, what questions to ask the attorney, and how to act quickly before the legal process moves forward without you.
The earlier we get involved, the more options are available. Many of the most powerful alternatives to incarceration — pretrial diversion, drug court, deferred sentencing — require action before charges are formally filed or before sentencing occurs. Time matters.
What Happens After a Drug-Related Arrest
1. Arrest and booking
Your family member is processed, charged, and either released on bail or held until arraignment. This is the moment to act — not after sentencing.
2. Arraignment
The first court appearance, where charges are formally presented and a plea is entered. An attorney should be in place by this point. If there isn't one, contact JWHope — we can help coordinate.
3. Pre-trial period
This is the most critical window for clinical intervention. Pretrial diversion, drug court referral, and clinical assessments can all happen here — potentially preventing a conviction entirely.
4. Sentencing
If the case proceeds to sentencing, a structured clinical recovery plan presented to the court can still influence the outcome — reducing or replacing jail time with supervised treatment.
JWHope can be involved at every stage. The earlier, the better.
What JWHope Does for Families
1
Explains your options clearly
The legal system is confusing — especially when you're in crisis. JWHope translates what's happening and what's possible, so you can make informed decisions and advocate effectively for your family member.
2
Conducts a clinical assessment
A licensed clinical professional evaluates your family member's substance use disorder, co-occurring conditions, and treatment needs. This assessment becomes the foundation for any clinical alternative presented to the court.
3
Develops a structured recovery plan
We build a written, evidence-based recovery plan that attorneys and courts can present as a credible alternative to incarceration — with specific treatment phases, timelines, and accountability measures.
4
Coordinates with the legal team
JWHope works alongside defense attorneys, public defenders, and court personnel to align the clinical plan with legal requirements and timelines. You don't have to manage two separate conversations.
4
Provides court reporting and monitoring
Throughout the process, JWHope provides regular compliance reports to the court — giving judges and attorneys the documentation they need to make informed, defensible decisions.
